Palmer Reuther commented on Abby Burnham's blog post Hospitals are Tweeting and Friending their Way to New Patients
"Vivienne Stearns-Elliott is right. That is, if society remained at a standstill and baby boomers were not the generation at the fastest rate (and yes the boomers like their computers)."

Hospitals are Tweeting and Friending their Way to New Patients

There was an interesting post in The Baltimore Business Journal highlighting the Greater Baltimore Medical Center’s work with social media. The Center has been using a variety of social media—like Facebook, YouTube, Flickr and Twitter to promote events and connect with new and current patients. According to this piece, “consumers are relying less on word-of-mouth referrals and looking more to social media outlets to choose the kinds of products and services they use — including health care.”The…See More

New Standards for Electronic Health Records

This week The New York Times covered a somewhat surprising new twist in the use of electronic health records (EHRs): starting in 2015, hospitals and doctors will be subject to financial penalties under Medicare if they are not using electronic health records. Even more surprising was a bit of information from health and human services. According to a representative, only 20 percent of doctors and 10 percent of hospitals use even basic electronic health records. For a country known to be…See More

Abby Burnham commented on Ben Haber's blog post Healthcare Apps for Smartphones: Good & Bad
"I think this article definitley has a good point. While posting my article on the "KidDoc" iPhone application I started thinking that, especially with children, it's best to visit an actual doctor with any symptoms that warrent…"

iPhone App Gives Parents a Pediatrician in Their Pocket

There's another healthcare application for the iPhone: the KidsDoc iPhone app, which is based on a triage system used in children's hospitals and nurse advice call centers, and created by a pediatrician. According to U.S. News & World Report, the system this app is based on has been tested for 15 years among more than 150 million phone calls. The app provides information on symptoms, and appropriate next steps that range from visiting your doctor the next day to calling 911. It also…See More

Endoscopy... for the iPhone

Technology is increasingly benefiting the medical industry-- and in surprising ways. One example is the eGoWorks application for the iPhone, which facilitates data storage, management, and sharing of images by endoscopists. Using the application or associated software endoscopists can easily upload videos and images of procedures from the endogo endoscopy systems, or from other sources, as well as reports. Physicians can view and edit images and videos, and even select individual patients whose…See More

Don't like your diagnosis? Think about moving

Reuters has an interesting article this week on diagnoses varying geographically. According to a recent study, doctors in some parts of the U.S. are more likely to tell Medicare patients they are sick than in other parts. One of the most interesting pieces of commentary in the article was the reminder that there is clearly variation in the way doctors practice medicine across the U.S. The full article is below.…See More

Survey: 58% of docs to roll out e-health records in next two years

While there has been an increasingly popular movement by patients to share medical advice through online forums, doctors have not as quickly adopted digital avenues. Still, this recent survey of 1,000 U.S. physicians found that 90% felt electronic medical records (EMRs) brought value to their practice-- so it's no wonder that Accenture predicts a huge rise in doctors' adoption of the technology. But will doctors' adoption of new information technology stop here? It will be interesting to see if…See More
