Connecting to Haiti

The initial stream of support to Haiti following its devastating earthquake was an amazing act of humanity to watch unfold. Volunteer physicians from all over the world dropped what they were doing to be where their skills were most needed. Now, months after the incident, physicians that can no longer be present physically in Haiti, are reaching out through telecommunication to diagnose and recommend treatment. This instance represents a small piece of what an effective physician network could…See More

Social Networks as a Lifeline - Building a Support System

It seems that we hear quite a bit about the negative aspects, downfalls and dangers of social networking, especially around privacy concerns in health care. What many have neglected to acknowledge is the support system intrinsically found within the online health community and its critical role to the patient in terms of shared experience. - Rachel Social Networks a Lifeline for the Chronically IllThe New York…See More

Today's WSJ - "Trusting Other Patients' Drug Advice"

Over the past several years, we've seen the onslaught of direct-to-consumer drug ads manifest and witnessed the development of patient testimonials within them. In part as a result of market research, is seems that drug-companies are starting to make better use of patient advocates to influence social network discussions. I wonder how this will affect medical social community discussions and openness/suspicions of participants? How can we force disclosures to be made?Trusting Other Patients'…See More

Rachel Adam commented on Dan Carter's blog post CDC Using Social Media to Communicate the lastest on H1N1
"I agree, Dan - this is a great utilization of social networking tools to spread valuable information. I'm worried, though, that the same networks could promote dispensing false information too, or encourage the onset of hysteria if something is…"

Rachel Adam replied to Jackie Hanley's discussion A replacement for or an accompaniment to the office visit?
"I think this type of a community could be really useful - worth it for the risk, in my opinion. While I agree that I would never want an online resource to completely replace routine/scheduled in-person visits, it's possible, and likely, that…"

Rachel Adam commented on Rachel Adam's blog post Facebook for Seniors?
"Good point, Cheri - I guess that's more of what I meant, a more integrated networking site for the aged. I'm not sure how I'd feel about my grandmother on FB though, the culture shock may be too much!"

Cheri Keith commented on Rachel Adam's blog post Facebook for Seniors?
"There are a lot of social networks for those who've advanced in age... like ThirdAge.com, Eons and TeeDeeBee...It will be interesting to see how these networks integrate with FB, as their grandchildren and children continue to be more connected…"

Facebook for Seniors?

New research indicates that seniors who stay social are likely to have better motor skills than those who are not. Given the multitude of social/networking platforms available, is there one that could potentially cater specifically to the 60+ crowd? What about the learning curve associated?

Twitter & Heart beat

Interesting to see social media being using in conjunction with a physical item for communication to a larger audience. But, like the article flags, could this create too many "cry wolf" scenarios? How can we tell the real events from the fail whales?
