Roberta Main-Millar commented on Amy Dunn's blog post Professional bodies join the debate over NHS reforms
"Agree - it will be interesting to see whether the government is listening - they seem to be focussing on hard hitting case studies, such as rectifying Celyn Williams' mother's complaint rather than answering mass concerns on the changes…"

Roberta Main-Millar commented on Roberta Main-Millar's blog post Twitter in a flap about NHS Reform
"Good point Amy - there was an illustration in The Times (p.9, 20th Jan 2011) of the 'NHS of the future' - looks very fragmented. I've taken an interest in this initiative and found it very confusing so not sure how your average man…"

Amy Dunn commented on Roberta Main-Millar's blog post Twitter in a flap about NHS Reform
"Now that the health bill has been published, it is interesting that more professional bodies are coming forward to express their views on the changes. The Royal College of Physicians have released an initial statement here, and while RCP…"

"What a great analysis, it's indeed interesting to see that not one Government official is engaging with the public on this, surely that's a missed trick."

Twitter in a flap about NHS Reform

With the UK government due to publish its Health and Social Care Bill on Wednesday, it seems the Twitter community has already made its mind up on how it feels about the proposed changes. A quick search of NHS on Twitter shows that workers are unhappy with their situation, the general public are worried about the…See More

Roberta Main-Millar commented on Anna Gueldenhaupt's blog post The WHO’s eHealth Survey
"I think the use of eMedicine is great, especially for those who are less mobile and for healthcare professionals learning. The one thing that concerns me is that this will become 'the norm' and people who do not have access to the Internet…"

Roberta Main-Millar commented on Tanya Holloway's blog post Would you blog about your illness?
"This is indeed an interesting post - I would think I wouldn't blog about my illnerss but can see why a lot of people would from a support point of view - especially for rare conditions or conditions that require a lot of intervention."

Lauren Backstrom commented on Roberta Main-Millar's blog post 'Rate your Doctor' – Will it Help or Hinder?
"This is an interesting feature - but I agree, generally unhappy people are most likely to post reviews, and in this case can really hurt a good GP's reputation. Social media can really help but getting information from multiple sources is still…"

'Rate your Doctor' – Will it Help or Hinder?

The new feature on NHS Choices that allows patients to write reviews on their GPs has been met with a mixed response in the UK.While I can see the value in such a scheme in terms of encouraging GPs to be competitive and receive honest feedback from patients, I do also worry it will hinder people in their GP choice.I experienced this myself when…See More

Anna Gueldenhaupt commented on Roberta Main-Millar's blog post The Dangers of Over-Sharing
"Great post, I particularly like that you've coined the phrase 'social diagnosis' as that's exactly what it is. I've often thought that while it's great to be able to check your symptoms online, you never really know…"

The Dangers of Over-Sharing

When you are ill the first thing you want to know is that you’re unnecessarily worried by your symptoms and all will be OK. That’s a natural thought, but what isn’t natural but has become second nature to many is broadcasting your symptoms or illness online with the hope strangers will provide some answers. This isn’t self diagnosis, this is social diagnosis and is very dangerous. What is probably a simple headache caused by mild dehydration can be discussed online and you’re soon convinced that…See More

Virtually Cured

I have found a very interesting scientific project that I would like to share with you. The Virtual Physiological Human (VPH) project is an initiative that is being developed to allow computers to personalise disease diagnosis and treatment. Still in early development, the project intends to develop a database of all known ailments and treatment methods, which can be converted into digital data. When in use, patients would have their bodies scanned and… Continue

Remote Surgeons

Would you trust a machine with your life? Millions of people around the world do when the drive their car or take a plane, but what if it was for surgery?

It’s been announced today that a remote controlled robot arm has been used to successfully treat a heart patient. In a medical first, the physicians sat in a separate room and guided a catheter through the patient’s arteries to burn off rogue tissue.

The new remote technique has several benefits. This procedure uses X-rays.… Continue
