Withdrawal Symptoms Accompany Social Media Abstinence - No Surprise

This morning I saw an article in the Telegraph (it happens when you follow folks in the U.K.) discussing the results of a small social media study. Ten self-professed Facebook addicts and ten power-tweeters were asked to forgo social media for four weeks. No surprise, many of them started to tweak out a bit, stating they felt disconnected from…

In Response to the New York Times and Rosie O'Donnell: Chew Aspirin.

Rosie O’Donnell described her heart attack on blog, saying she felt an ache in her chest and soreness in her arms, followed by nausea and a “clammy” feeling. She took an aspirin and decided against calling 911. The next day she went to a hospital, where she learned one of her coronary arteries was 99 percent blocked, requiring a stent.

As the daughter of a heart…

Will Augmented Reality Change the Face of Health Care?

On Wednesday Google teased a new video for Project Glass, an application that allows users to experience augmented reality through glasses. While the video (below) focuses on the day to day functionality of the device, there are important implications of the glasses in health care as well.

Imagine a doctor walking in to patient’s room. Instead of picking up a chart to read his medical history or looking at a screen to check his vitals, the doctor engages an application in augmented…

A generic health and social care model

Hi everyone,

I champion the following conceptual model introduced through a website and blog - Welcome to the QUAD. I have been blogging since April 2006 and there is quite an archive now and a bibliography:

New Survey Shows High Demand for Medical Mobile Apps

This week PricewaterhouseCoopers released results of a new survey which revealed that that, "one-third of Americans would be willing to use their cell phone to track

health information, and about 40 percent said they'd pay for a mobile

phone app that let them refill prescriptions, provided access to health

records or nagged them to take their meds." The survey was completed by 2,000 consumers and 1,000 physicians.… Continue

Telemedicine: The Future of Health Care?

Picture this: a 3-year-old girl falls and cracks her skull. She is rushed to off to emergency care, but the local hospital may not have all the tools necessary to help the girl and traffic will prevent the child from receiving care from a better staffed hospital. A grim situation, sure, but this little girl was ultimately saved by both the local clinic and the far away hospital. How? Using web-cams and…

iPad Follow-up Post: Will it Really be Adapted in the Hospital Setting?

In my post a couple of weeks ago, I discussed what the "Apple Tablet," now known as the iPad, could mean for healthcare. Now that the iPad has been released and reviewed, the medical community is torn on it's place in their world. My view is a bit more skeptical that it was before the release, but I still look forward to watching this play out. While the iPad may become a convenient replacement for… Continue

FDA Hearing on Social Media Set for November

Well, better late then never. The FDA has scheduled a meeting for November 12/13 to address how to deal with social media. Make no mistake that this is a significant step forward as it's been a giant gray area for everyone involved. Manufacturers have dipped their toe into social media, some more then others, but have been hesitant to dive in fully since no direction has been given. Certainly, this is the beginning of a long process, but good progress none the less.

Let's just hope… Continue
