If you haven’t come across the slew of articles or overheard watercooler-chatter about Movember, you mostly are in the minority. They're talking about moustaches. But this post is for the ladies, or shall I say mo sistas.
Movember.com says “a Mo Sista is a woman who loves a Mo. An individual that is dedicated to supporting the Mo Bros in her life through their moustache growing journey; whether it be a friend, colleague, family member, partner or boyfriend. These inspirational women are committed to raising awareness of men's health issues and much needed funds for men's health along the way.”
Let’s face it, we’re in the age of manscaping and skinny ties, so the thought of growing a moustache is probably not only intimidating, but also goes against the code of the metro man. Enter Mo Sistas. The ladies, who obviously can’t grow their own moustache, support the journey and commitment of the Mo Bro to grow and maintain a moustache throughout the month of November.
But it’s not just about the Mo. It’s getting men to talk about their health, with friends, a health care professional, or just being aware of the risks they may face, specifically prostate and testicular cancer. If you see a Mo Bro, ask if he’s had an annual health check up and if over 40, a PSA Test. Order health materials from Movember.com for the men in your life, and of course, smile at a Mo Bro and compliment his Mo!
I’m looking forward to seeing men throughout Boston with the Mo, my colleagues and friends, and can only hope that when I visit my parents for Thanksgiving, my dad will have his Mo too. Also make sure you use the #Movember hashtag on Twitter!
